Understanding Subaru Model Codes

This ‘how to’ covers the basics of Subaru model codes. You will see throughout the ICP website that we refer to ‘applied model code’ for the fitment of parts. This is due to the overlap of production changes throughout the model years. For example, a JDM 1996 Subaru Impreza has 2 model codes C & D with an overlap of production months. Applied model code C is for models manufactured between 06/1994 to 08/1996 & D is for models manufactured between 04/1996 To 07/1997 as you can see there is an overlap of 4 months even though they are completely different models, I.E model code C is a version 2 WRX STi, model code D is a version 3 WRX STi.

The applied model code can be found on the chassis/vin tag that is on the car, depending on the model, it is either located on the strut tower in the engine bay, or a black vin label on the door pillar. Here are some examples of VIN tags

The applied model code is always shown on the VIN plate, Depending on the model it will start with the model prefix, IE VAB is JDM 2014+ WRX STi, GT7 is an Impreza/XV 2016+ then after the model prefix is a letter, this is the model code letter. This shows the model change month/year for your car.
